Biography
Mary Desmond was raised in an Irish family in Liverpool. After gaining a BA in Architecture she worked in practices in London and Spain for several years before completing an MSc in Building Design for Developing Countries at UCL in 1990.
In the early 1990’s she transferred to Madrid where she studied painting in Artium Peña, Plaza Mayor and enrolled in the Circulo de Bellas Artes figure classes. In 2005 she relocated to Rome with her Italian husband and three children where she enrolled in a Masters in Painting. During this time she produced a series of portraits using personal photographs as sources whilst further developing her interest in the expressive possibilities of colour in her figure study series.
Following the Master’s she attended several painting courses at the Slade in London where she started to explore the theme of memories. Her latest works use personal photographs as a starting point for a series of works on paper, unstretched canvas and irregular three dimensional supports she shapes from plaster. Her works attempt to portray the shifting meanings and fragility of memory.
