Biography

Mary Desmond was born in Liverpool and raised in an Irish family in Lancashire.  After gaining a BA in Architecture she worked in practices in London and Spain for several years before completing an MSc in Building Design for Developing Countries at UCL in 1990.

In the early 1990’s she transferred to Madrid and first began to study painting, enrolling in the Circulo de Bellas Artes figure classes.  In 2005 she relocated to Rome, gaining a Masters in Painting in 2007.  During this time she began using personal photographs as a source for her work and continued to develop the expressive possibilities of colour in a series of figure studies.

Following the Master’s she attended several painting courses at the Slade in London.  Her latest works, on paper, unstretched canvas and irregular three dimensional supports shaped from plaster, use personal photographs and written work as a starting point to explore the shifting meanings and fragility of memory.
